COMPACT & DSLR's PROS & CONS

Posted by Rupesh Kumar Karki
The first question that arises in ones mind is - what kind of camera do you have? and what type of photos do you want to take?
we have already seen that the benefit of point & shoot is it is compact, ready to use camera, immediately available pictures and even price is low compared to entry level DSLR's but some drawbacks are also there like RAW files can't be created, image quality compromise, can't get viewfinders, fixed lens , little to explore in manual settings and above all we can't get the desired depth of field, DSLR's do have it's own light meter, this helps a lot in knowing the exact exposure, whether it is under exposed or over exposed. Being with DSLR, you have the option of setting shutter speed and aperture; you can set fast, medium & slow shutter speed. People are very much fascinated about the bokeh effect in their pictures and like a lot, this is also possible with DSLR's and gives better quality pictures.
Even Being having so many drawbacks, it is good to start with these compact cameras as we get to set our hand in photography and initially it is better to understand some basic concepts and if you find that your passion is not letting you rest than keep on moving with the growing experience, otherwise it has been seen that DSLR's become an object of taking selfies.
Many a times we get to see that people are confused which camera to purchase compact or DSLR, on the basis of my experience I think one should go first for compact; enjoy the moment and the photography together and when you get time, try to explore compact camera and use that in its best possible way and when you are ready to go further then study about DSLR camera. Then you decide considering your budget which DSLR best suits you.
As it was initial stage of learning therefore I wasn't aware of any rule of thirds in photography. Some other day we will see what is rule of Thirds. These are some of the pictures of flower that I took from my Point & Shoot camera without worrying about any rule. The below picture was in auto mode and at that time I used to enjoy and tried to understand how it is creating that little blurred background.

After taking these few regular shots, I noticed that blur effect was due to keeping my camera close to the subject and it was giving that effect. I was happy that now at least I know how it is appearing blurred. Distance also matters, from this only I came to know and all the more starting searching for more options that I could play with. During these days I just wanted to take pictures and as good as possible and with shallow depth of field.
 GOT MY GIFT:
I am lucky enough, to be bestowed with such great parents and my soul mate who never let me crave long for something. Whenever I used my Point & Shoot camera and unable to get that quality of work in my photography, I used to talk to have DSLR at least  entry level. This was in my routine to keep on checking about upcoming DSLR's and to talk about that with my family and friends.
It was also not so easy for me to purchase that because of it's expensive nature and used to think that I can't get DSLR easily.
One day was so graceful for me that I can never forget. That day in evening when a gift packed box given to me I wasn't excited that much but when I opened that box, it was like mouth wide open no words to speak out not even "Thank you" sort of thing, it was just like I wished with closed eyes and when I opened my eyes that wish came true and it was on my lap.
Here I am sharing this thing because when we get something like this it becomes all the more precious for you and the same thing is with me. As soon as it was in my hand I didn't even wait for that night to let go and took my first picture, the picture of full moon.

This is how I got my gift and happy to play with my toy and still keep on searching to photograph as much as I can and wants to share with those, who are also interested in photography. It is not necessary to be a professional photographer but if someone is interested in photography then one can take a beautiful snap even with their cell phones. This is all about interest and I will keep on posting my photographs here with their details.
In my future post I will also try to answer some of the questions which generally arises in a layman mind about camera, gears and photography.
