COMPOSITION

Posted by Rupesh Kumar Karki

If we see the literal meaning of "composition" then it is 'a creative work'; yes definitely, when we talk about photography we should never forget one thing in that and that is creativity -which includes many things as when we are photographing a child and that also outside somewhere in lawn or garden or park then we have to see that how beautifully can we bring out from that surrounding or available natures gift.
If we are thinking about portraits and that also face closeup, the photograph will be with shallow depth of field and therefore we don't need to concentrate on background. you can see from the figure-1(a) below.

Here what matters is your way of presentation of photo or the person and the best way, if you are taking close shots from the side face then to keep some space in front of the person you are photographing because it creates some sort of movement or interest in the photo. Just like below picture where I have taken the close but kept some space intentionally because you can edit other things but can't create such original space and also the time will not go back and allow you to take the snap. Therefore, under such conditions you have to be aware of how and what are you photographing. Your concise plays a very important role under such conditions. You have to compose in such a manner that it creates some urge in the person to see his/ her picture and the same person would be interested in getting all the more photo shoot from you, so here you experience and ability counts along with some good gears also.
Where as in second figure-1(b) you can see little bit of background awareness is required, here  background is not clear but source of light is playing a very important role in this photo. This picture was taken in a bus in a casual way and it was the best one.

Now from the below figure-1(c) you can know that background has to be taken care of because here background is little blurry but not that much that we can not make out 'what is in the background' of this picture. These two little kids were just playing and wanted me to take their photos and they were also quite shy to be in front of lens and I could not make the elder girl to smile, here I think that I failed because a smile in kids face create all together a different story but here I am trying to show that in composition background also matters and I really feel sad that at that time I didn't notice car behind the kids and it altogether disturbed the natural view of mustard plant and flower.

So, from the above pictures we can easily make out that how background plays a very important role, when we are photographing. If you click of picture and later you find that someone is standing behind or some garbage is littering then surely it will spoil your photo. If background is not good and not taken care of then it even destroy all your efforts. Considering background is one of the important part of photography composition.
whatever I experience that I share with you and if you think something in this post is missing or wrongly presented, you are free to comment.

RULE OF THIRDS:

I am going to share with you all the rule of thirds because many a times this question is asked that why do we place the main subject to the right or left of a photo?
Just simply to answer this question I will place some photos along with whole description of how it is has to be followed. This all is based on my reading as well as on my own experience of photography. Below  in the image you can see that this photo is not creating any interesting point and above all the bird falls in the middle of photo which is not creating any interest. This shows static nothing to move on and everything closed.
Static Image
Bird is in the center of photo
The rule of thirds is a guideline which applies to the process of composing photographs. Rule of thirds is followed to maintain the interest in image by eliminating sense of complexity. Sometimes picture also look busy. Many a times it is not possible to make settings so as to apply rule of thirds but nothing to worry we can follow the guideline in post processing. It is not necessary to keep the subject in the thirds but to avoid from keeping subject in the center of the photo.

In compact as well as DSLR, you get the option of grid lines to view your subject and apply  the rule of thirds. These grids are in 2 vertical and 2 horizontal lines. They together form 9 equal parts. The main subject should be placed along these lines or point of intersection.
We can understand this with the example - in this you can see that butterfly is exactly at intersection point, this is how it creates a kind of discipline in any image. This even shows the direction of  your subject.

The above photo was taken at the backyard of my house and it was really seconds of time within which I had to take the shot. I gave enough space, so that  later editing can be done and rule of thirds can be applied.
Rule of  Thirds is also considered as a thumb rule in photography, but what if someday you have to break this. Nothing serious, sometimes to get the desired effect in an image it becomes necessary to do so.
suppose you have taken a shot of architectural building then you can't always follow the rule of thirds. It is not mandatory that you have to stick to this rule all the time, it is also your inner sense that tells you. If you think that you want to present like this or that in your photo then it all depends on you. We all have often heard this that rule is made to be broken.
