Bokeh is a Japanese term "boke" which means "blur" and is used for expressing blurred effect in the background of a subject or you can also express in term of background defocus. Which is also called Shallow depth of field. People like a photo most, they refer such photographs with the word superb, in which the subject is in focus and the background is completely out of focus. This effect can be brought up in an image with some technique as well as the use of fast or longer focal lenses.
People die hard to get the photograph with bokeh effect in that and this feature all more comes up in a lighter area. If the background is with some sort of light then it all the more adds beauty in that photograph. Technically we get circular shapes in the lights in the background that is due to blades of the lens.
Mostly, it is talked about how to get the bokeh effect in your image?
To get the best bokeh effect some technique & good lens is required which I will describe point by point.
First, if you have lenses with a larger aperture and these lenses are prime lens like f/1.4 or f/1.8 then it gives a nice bokeh effect in the photograph.
Second, in order to achieve this, you have to keep the larger aperture like f/1.4, f/1.8, f/2.8, etc. in this way we get a very good blurred effect in the image. The below image is an example of a fast lens and with a wide aperture. This kind of effect you get if you apply the wide aperture setting with a fast lens.

Third, if you have set a wide aperture then this can be useful to get the desired effect only by getting closer to the subject. The below image is an example of taking shot getting closer to the subject, minimizing the distance between the lens and the subject. This is taken approximately 7 or 8 inches away from the flower.
Fourth, if you want to completely blur out or defocus the background then you have to keep the subject away from the background, it means to increase the distance between the subject and background, Sometimes defocusing the front also makes the subject looks nice or highlights the main subject, the below image is a good example of such photography.
Fifth, use of longer focal lens also creates a nice bokeh effect, in order to achieve the desired effect you have to increase the focal length and keep the lowest aperture. The below image is taken with the 55-200mm lens at 200mm with the lowest aperture of f/5.6, which gave the blurred background result.
Nikon D5500 + 50mm lens, Minimum Distance from Subject |
Nikon D5500 + 50mm lens Front & Background Defocus |
Nikon D5500 + 50mm lens @ 200mm, Aperture f/5.6 |
Conclusion:
We get the bokeh effect by including several factors and using techniques, when we keep on taking pictures by applying settings in the camera to get the desired effect then slowly you start noticing small-small things and applying in your photography. The only thing that is required is practice with patience, one has to practice considering all the above situations and applying the best possible technique to get the best bokeh effect in your photography.
